O disco de estréia de Illa J foi uma pedrada de peso com um privilégio pra poucos: todos os beats eram assinados por J. Dilla. Também não é pra menos, né? Illa J é o irmão mais novo do falecido produtor e tinha em suas mãos parte do gigantesco acervo de beats não lançados de Dilla. No ano passado, ele juntou-se a Frank Nitty pra mais um trabalho sob os beats de Jay Dee. Mas ainda estava no ar aquela pergunta: e quando os beats não forem do Dilla? Será que vai manter a qualidade?

Demorou, mas chegou. Atualmente morando no Canadá, Illa J deu a resposta em um belo trabalho trazendo uma banca de canadenses talentosos como Kaytranada e Moka Only em colaborações ao seu lado. E a pegada é bem diferente. O álbum tem produção da dupla em ascensão Potatohead People, sem uso de samples, tudo tocado, com influências de jazz, soul e até eletrônico. Pra agradar os ouvidos…

Illa J debut album was a heavily good surprise, but with an advantage for privileged few: all of the beats were signed by J. Dilla. No wonder: Illa J is the younger brother of the sadly gone legend, and had in his hands part of the gigantic collection of Dilla‘s non-released beats. Last year, he joined Frank Nitty for another work, this time with Jay Dee‘s beats. And that question was still floating: how it’ll be when the beats are not from Dilla? Will the quality be the same?

It took a while, but the new work has now arrived. Currently living in Canada, Illa J gave the answer in a fine album, bringing a dream team of canadian talents like Kaytranada and Moka Only for collabs. The vibe is very different. Produced by emerging duo Potatohead People, all the tracks don’t make use of samples. Every instrument is played, with influences of jazz, soul and even electronic music. It definetly pleases the ears…
